Portuguese sweet almonds are closely associated with Easter, present on tables and family memories.

The homemade version caramelizes almonds with sugar, creating a simple and crunchy shell.

Ingredients

  • 300 g of almonds with skin
  • 220 g of sugar
  • 100 ml of water
  • Cinnamon optional
  • 1 pinch of salt

Preparation Method

  1. Mix sugar, water, and almonds in a wide saucepan.
  2. Cook while stirring until the syrup crystallizes.
  3. Continue stirring to coat the almonds.
  4. Allow some of the sugar to caramelize slightly.
  5. Spread on a baking sheet.
  6. Let cool completely.

  • Stir continuously when the syrup starts to dry.
  • Be careful not to burn the sugar.
  • Store in a well-sealed jar.

Possible Substitutions in Brazil

  • Nuts can be used, but they are no longer traditional almonds.
  • Cinnamon is optional.
