About the Recipe

Caco Cake is a bread from Madeira, flat and soft, often served warm.

The sweet potato gives texture and a slight sweetness to the dough.

Traditionally, it is baked on a hot surface and served with garlic butter.

Ingredients

  • 500 g of wheat flour
  • 250 g of cooked and mashed sweet potato
  • 10 g of dry yeast
  • 220 ml of warm water
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • Butter, garlic, and parsley for serving

Preparation Method

  1. Mix mashed sweet potato, flour, yeast, water, and salt.
  2. Knead until a soft dough forms.
  3. Let it rise until doubled.
  4. Divide into flat discs.
  5. Bake on a griddle or thick skillet, on both sides.
  6. Serve warm with garlic butter.

Tips from Empório Portugal

  • Sweet potato should be cold before adding to the dough.
  • Medium heat prevents burning on the outside and being raw inside.
  • Roll out the discs to an even thickness.

Possible Substitutions in Brazil

  • Brazilian sweet potato works well.
  • Cast iron skillet replaces the traditional griddle.
