About the Recipe

King Cake is one of the most well-known symbols of Portuguese Christmas.

The fermented dough, enriched with fruits and nuts, requires time and care to become aromatic and soft.

Ingredients

  • 600 g of flour
  • 12 g of dry yeast
  • 150 g of sugar
  • 4 eggs
  • 120 g of butter
  • 120 ml of warm milk
  • 250 g of candied fruits
  • 200 g of nuts
  • Orange zest
  • Port wine optional

Preparation Method

  1. Soak fruits and nuts with orange aroma and optional Port wine.
  2. Prepare dough with flour, yeast, milk, eggs, sugar, and butter.
  3. Knead until elastic.
  4. Incorporate fruits and nuts.
  5. Shape into a crown and let rise.
  6. Bake until golden.

Tips from Empório Portugal

  • Slow fermentation improves flavor.
  • Do not overload the dough with too many fruits.
  • Brush with egg for shine.

Possible Substitutions in Brazil

  • Dried fruits can replace some of the candied ones.
  • For a non-alcoholic version, use orange juice.

Pairing

Coffee, black tea, or Port wine. Content intended for those over 18 years old. Drink responsibly.
