About the Recipe

Portuguese-style Rabanadas are one of the most nostalgic flavors of Christmas, made with bread, milk, eggs, sugar, and cinnamon.

The recipe transforms day-old bread into a golden dessert, moist on the inside and fragrant.

Ingredients

  • 1 bread suitable for rabanada or day-old baguette
  • 700 ml of milk
  • Peel of lemon
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 4 eggs
  • Sugar and cinnamon for sprinkling
  • Oil for frying

Preparation Method

  1. Heat milk with lemon and cinnamon and let it warm up.
  2. Cut the bread into thick slices.
  3. Dip the slices in the flavored milk.
  4. Dip in beaten eggs.
  5. Fry until golden on both sides.
  6. Drain and sprinkle with sugar and cinnamon.

Tips from Empório Portugal

  • Day-old bread absorbs without falling apart.
  • Milk should be warm, not boiling.
  • Fry in hot oil to avoid sogginess.

Possible Substitutions in Brazil

  • Day-old French bread can be used.
  • Baking is also possible, resulting in a different texture.

Pairing

Coffee, black tea, or Tawny Port Wine. Content intended for those over 18 years old. Drink responsibly.
