About the Recipe

Steak à Portuguesa is a traditional restaurant dish and a hearty lunch.

The sauce is born from the skillet, with garlic, bay leaf, wine, and ham, enveloping the steak without hiding the meat.

Ingredients

  • 2 thick steaks
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 slices of ham
  • 3 sliced garlic cloves
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 80 ml of white wine
  • 2 tablespoons of butter or olive oil
  • French fries
  • Salt and pepper

Preparation Method

  1. Season the steaks with salt and pepper.
  2. Quickly brown in a hot skillet and set aside.
  3. In the same skillet, sauté garlic, bay leaf, and ham.
  4. Add wine and reduce the sauce.
  5. Return the steaks to heat.
  6. Serve with fried egg and fries.

Tips from Empório Portugal

  • Do not overcook the steak.
  • The sauce should be quick and shiny.
  • Ham is used in small amounts for flavor.

Possible Substitutions in Brazil

  • Use flank steak, sirloin, or tenderloin.
  • Raw ham can be replaced with very thin bacon.

Pairing

Young red wine or light beer. Content intended for those over 18 years old. Drink responsibly.
