About the recipe

Bolo lêvedo is an Azorean specialty, especially associated with São Miguel.

It lies between bread and cake, with a soft texture and slightly sweet flavor, great with butter.

Ingredients

  • 500 g of flour
  • 10 g of dry yeast
  • 200 ml of warm milk
  • 80 g of sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 60 g of butter
  • 1 pinch of salt
  • Flour for rolling

Preparation method

  1. Mix ingredients and knead until a soft dough forms.
  2. Let it rise until doubled.
  3. Divide into thick discs.
  4. Let it rest again.
  5. Cook on a griddle or low skillet, on both sides.
  6. Serve warm with butter.

Tips from Empório Portugal

  • Low heat cooks the center without burning the outside.
  • Discs should not be too thin.
  • The dough is slightly sweet.

Possible substitutions in Brazil

  • Use a heavy non-stick skillet.
  • Butter can be replaced with vegetable cooking cream.

Pairing

Coffee, tea, or milk. No mandatory alcoholic beverage.
